When in Pain, Go to the Freezer for Some Ice

I get a lot of questions on whether to apply ice or heat following an injury. I can honestly say, that I perform at least one near miracle every week by simply having a patient stop applying heat and begin applying ice for the treatment of their pain.

When to Apply Ice

Applying ice is particularly important if you have had a specific incident, which resulted in an obvious injury with immediate onset of pain and swelling. Ice is remarkably effective at decreasing circulation and thus decreasing the inflammatory response in the initial phase of an injury. It is also a very effective analgesic (pain reliever) without all the side effects of anti-inflammatory medications.
